Description

The camera stays on the network

The main difference from the older RC4 range is the control method. RC4 runs an RS-232 and VISCA serial line to the camera, RC5 runs full Ethernet. The camera therefore keeps its IP address, its web interface and control from the codec or from a control system, because the RC5-HE module at the codec is also a two-port switch. No separate network cable has to be run to the rack for the camera, the one cable that carries video and power is enough.

The suffix in the code sets the cabling, not the electronics

The electronics of the modules are the same across the whole range. Individual kits differ only in the set of cables and connectors supplied for a particular camera and codec, and that is exactly what the suffix in the order code says. RC5-P60 is the same kit as RC5-CW4, only with cabling for the Cisco Precision 60 instead of cabling for the Cisco Webex 4K PTZ. Choosing the suffix by the customer's camera and codec is the whole point of the order, see the table below.

RC5+ is a different generation, not a variant

Alongside the RC5 kits the range includes one item of the higher generation, RC5+UNI. It is not a slightly better RC5, it is a different platform: uncompressed 4K60 video at 4:4:4 sampling, 66 W camera power over PoE++ and a WPS-48 power supply instead of the WPS-12. The modules are called RC5+ HE and RC5+ CE and they are not mixed with RC5 modules. When ordering it is therefore necessary to separate whether the customer needs 4K30 with a 12 V supply or 4K60 with PoE++.

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • The camera stays on the network, control runs over IP and the RC5-HE module serves as a two-port switch

  • Video up to 4K30 with HDCP up to version 2.2, and up to 100 metres over CAT6A

  • The WPS-12 power supply is part of the kit, so no 230 V socket is needed at the camera

  • The box holds the PowerSniffer tester, which checks the wiring of the run before start-up

Limits and what to tell the customer

  • The minimum length of the run is 10 metres. For a shorter distance between codec and camera this kit is not intended.

  • 4K30 over CAT5e and CAT6 only up to 70 metres. For 4K30 at 100 metres CAT6A is needed, otherwise 1080p60 applies.

  • The CAT cable between the modules is not part of the kit, the integrator supplies it. The link has to be point to point, without joints, terminated to T568A or T568B.

  • The system takes up to two minutes to come up. At handover it does not look like a fault, it just has to be waited out.

  • RC5+UNI is a different generation with the WPS-48 supply and 66 W PoE++ power. It is not mixed with RC5 modules.

  • The range comes as RC5 and RC5 Gen2 with Cisco Control Hub integration. We will confirm the generation of a specific reference before ordering.

  • Two-way audio to the camera is carried by the RC8 range, which is for the Cisco Quad Camera only.

Recommended deployment of RC5

Typical situation

a PTZ camera controlled over Ethernet on a wall, near the ceiling or in a stud wall, codec in a rack or in another room

Distance

10 metres minimum, 100 metres maximum, depending on cable category and resolution

Camera control

over IP, the camera stays visible on the network

Place in the portfolio

the current range for IP cameras, successor to RC4, with RC5+ and its 4K60 above it

Good fit

A PTZ camera controlled over IP, a requirement for the camera to stay on the network, video up to 4K30, a run of 10 to 100 metres, a customer whose camera is on the RC5-UNI camera list, one cable run instead of a video run, a network cable and a socket at the camera.

Verify

The exact model of both camera and codec, because they decide the suffix. The cable category, because 4K30 at 100 metres requires CAT6A. The real length of the run, the minimum being 10 metres. Whether it is RC5 or RC5 Gen2 with Cisco Control Hub integration. Whether the camera should also serve a laptop over USB, in which case RC-SDA5+.

Consider another range

RC4 for a camera with RS-232 and VISCA serial control. RC5+UNI for uncompressed 4K60 and PoE++ power. RC8 for the Cisco Quad Camera, where two-way audio and dual HDMI are needed. RC-SDA5+ where the same camera should also serve a laptop over USB 3.0.

The “Verify” and “Consider another range” cards come from the experience of the atlantis team.

Which camera and codec

The suffix in the order code sets which camera and codec the kit is cabled for. The electronics are the same in every RC5 kit; RC5+UNI is a different generation.

What to check before ordering and deploying

  1. Camera and codec: the exact models on both ends, they decide the suffix of the order code

  2. Control method: RC5 carries control over IP; a camera with serial control belongs to the RC4 range

  3. Resolution and cable category: 4K30 at 100 metres requires CAT6A, over CAT5e and CAT6 the limit is 70 metres

  4. Length of the run: minimum 10 metres, maximum 100 metres, a point to point link without joints, the cable supplied by the integrator

  5. Network: the camera stays on the network through the switch in the RC5-HE module, so check the addressing and the network rules for room devices

  6. Mounting and rack: an RCM mount on the -K and -KS variants, the RC-RK2 shelf on the -S and -KS variants

  7. BYOD: whether the camera should also serve a laptop over USB 3.0, in which case an RC-SDA5+ kit instead of RC5

  8. Warranty: the extension to 5 years has the code RC5-5Y, order it with the kit

The atlantis team will help with every point. On RC5 the usual sticking points are confusing it with the RC4 range over the control method, and confusing the RC5+UNI kit with an ordinary RC5 kit. We will go through both with you before the order, together with the mapping of codes to cameras.

Management and services

  • No cloud management: These products have no central or cloud management. Passive kits and cabling need no configuration at all, active modules are set with DIP switches on the module itself.

  • Firmware on active modules: on modules that allow a firmware update, it is loaded from a microSD card directly into the module. The procedure differs by range, so check it with us for the specific kit.

atlantis services for partners

atlantis is a direct importer and distributor, and we supply through a network of specialist partners. The services below are therefore offered to the partner, not to the end customer. The partner sets the scope. On one project we are only the source of the parts and a consultation, on another we design the whole run and oversee the work, on a third we take on the installation in full.

  • Choosing the kit by camera and distance: we pick the kit from the camera or codec the customer already has, how far it sits from the equipment and which interface is used, that is HDMI, USB or fibre. We also say what to do about a device that is not on the compatibility list.

  • Route design and building readiness: we go through the cable run with the partner, the category and length of the cabling, the number and position of the boxes, the wall penetration and the space in the rack. On in-wall mounts the opening size and cavity depth are what matters, and we settle those before the order, not on site.

  • Completing the order: we match the kit with the right cables, power supply and mount, because that is exactly where jobs are left unfinished. We check that the pieces fit each other by connector and by length, and that nothing the partner needs on day one is missing from the delivery.

  • Installation and commissioning: we handle the professional installation in full, or support the partner's own team where needed. Once it is wired we test the link at full distance, that is picture, camera control and power, before the ceiling is closed.

  • Integration with the customer's environment: we advise on connecting to the codec, to the control system and to third-party software and hardware, and on how the kit behaves when the camera is swapped for a different model.

  • Service, spare parts and warranty: our certified team in Czech, available to the partner throughout the equipment's life. We keep track of the replacement modules and parts by range and handle a warranty claim with the manufacturer on the partner's behalf.

Warranty

The standard warranty on Sound Control Technologies products is 3 years from the sale to the first purchaser, uniformly across the range. It applies equally to modules, cables, mounts and power supplies.

Compliance and certification

The supplied power supply carries UL, CE, FCC and RoHS compliance. We will confirm plenum rating for the cabling with your order.

plenum to be verified

Extended warranty order code. For the RC5 platform the extension to 5 years in total has the code RC5-5Y. Order it with the kit; we will confirm with your order whether it can be bought later. For the RC5+UNI kit, that is the higher RC5+ generation, we will confirm the cover before ordering.

FAQ

Does RC5 control the camera over a serial line or over IP?

RemoteCam5 (RC5) controls the camera over IP. The range carries HDMI with IP control and 12 V camera power; the RC5-CE module has one 10/100 port and the RC5-HE module a two-port layer 2 switch. RS-232 and VISCA serial control is carried by the older RC4 range.

What cable category do I need for 4K?

RemoteCam5 (RC5) carries 4K at 30 Hz up to 100 metres over CAT6A; over CAT5e and CAT6 the limit for 4K30 is 70 metres. Video at 1080p and 60 Hz goes up to 100 metres. The minimum length of the run is 10 metres and the link has to be point to point without joints.

What is the difference between RC5 and RC5+UNI?

RemoteCam5 (RC5) carries 4K30 and powers the camera with 12 V from the WPS-12 supply. RC5+UNI is the higher RC5+ generation with uncompressed 4K60 at 4:4:4 sampling, 66 W power over PoE++ and the WPS-48 supply. The RC5+ HE and RC5+ CE modules are not mixed with RC5 modules.

Will the camera stay reachable on the network?

RemoteCam5 (RC5) runs full Ethernet to the camera, so the camera keeps its IP address and its web interface. The RC5-HE module at the codec is a two-port 10/100 switch, so no further network cable has to be run to the rack for the camera.

What if no camera is listed for my code?

RemoteCam5 (RC5) has several codes whose camera mapping we will verify: P40, APA, 1BC, URM, BRC and BCS. On the older RC4 range the same suffixes carry a specific camera, but we do not carry that over to RC5 without verification. We will therefore confirm the mapping before ordering.

Can RC5 carry room audio as well?

RemoteCam5 (RC5) carries video, IP control and camera power. Two-way audio to the camera speaker is carried by the RC8 range, which is intended for the Cisco Quad Camera only.
